What teachers ask before getting started.

What is VirtIoT Lab?

A connected-objects lab that runs in the browser. Your students place sensors and gateways on a map, program them, and watch what travels across the network — with no hardware at all.

Radio propagation is simulated: distance and power decide what gets through and what is lost. A node too far from its gateway fails to join, exactly as it would in the field.

What do I need to install?

Nothing. Everything runs in the browser, for teachers and students alike. No administrator rights are needed on the machines, which avoids going through the institution’s IT department.

An up-to-date browser and a connection are enough. Labs run on our servers, not on the classroom machines.

Do my students need hardware?

No. That is the whole point of the platform: no sensors to buy, repair or replace, and no radio interference between groups sharing a room.

Simulated nodes answer the same AT commands as real hardware, and the network server is a genuine ChirpStack — what your students learn here transfers directly to a physical deployment.

How do I start a lab?

Create a cohort, then generate its join code: each student creates their own account on the “Join a cohort” page. Prefer handing out credentials? Import the list from a CSV file (last name, first name, e-mail): the platform generates them and returns a file for you to hand out.

Then pick a blueprint — it sets the lab rules: how many gateways and nodes are allowed, the area size, the protocol. Open the session, and each student gets their own isolated lab.

You follow progress live from your workspace, and close the session whenever you decide.

Which protocols are covered?

LoRaWAN, peer-to-peer LoRa, Zigbee, Thread and NB-IoT. Each comes with the real industry software — ChirpStack for LoRaWAN, for instance — not an imitation.

The Protocols pages describe in detail what each one lets a class do.

What happens to the work when a session ends?

A session stays open until you close it: no timer interrupts a lab in progress. On closing, the labs are destroyed and the resources released.

Configurations can be exported beforehand, so a lab can be resumed from one session to the next.

Can I try before committing?

Yes. Sign-up is open and gives access to the Discovery plan, with no card required: enough to set up a first session and run it with a small group.

Students never pay — only teachers are subscribed.
